Who knew Detergent was a theft risk?

One of the biggest items one of my stores is currently shrinking out in is laundry detergent, more specifically High Efficiency laundry detergent. While it may seem like an unusual item to be stolen, there is a very clear end game involved. It is used in the manufacturing of drugs.

We have lots of items that are tagged by the vendors to prevent retail theft, but laundry detergent is not one of them. So in order to come up with a retail anti-shoplifting strategy, we had to find a way to use our own retail anti-theft devices.

The easiest way we could figure it out was to take some cheap labels and put them in the inside of the laundry detergent’s cap. Since the labels would be peeled off if they were left on the outside, we knew we needed to hide them. The caps aren’t safety sealed, so we could twist the caps right back on.

So far, no shoplifters have caught on to where the labels are placed, but boy are they surprised when they set the alarms off going out the door.
