When did Shoplifting become a game?

I was walking through the mall over the weekend when I saw a man running toward the doors with a pair of shoes in his hands. There was another man chasing after him.

While my first reaction was concern for the situation unfolding before me, I quickly became confused. It appeared that the man being chased was laughing. He then threw back the box of shoes and kept on going out the doors. It seemed like a really strange game of “hot potato”. The thief seemed to solely be taking the shoes to taunt the store employee that was chasing him.

The second man picked up the shoes and started to walk back to ward the main thoroughfare of the mall. I noticed he had a nametag on from one of the shoe stores in the mall.

My initial reaction was right. It was a shoplifter. I guess he thought the whole thing would be funny to try and steal a pair of shoes. Since the shoes were inside a box, I couldn’t tell if they had any retail anti-theft devices on them.

It’s hard to try and prevent retail theft when a culprit thinks its all fun and games. Those are the times where the situation can quickly go downhill because the shoplifter suddenly realizes it is no longer a game.
