Three Types of Shoplifter

There are three main types of shoplifters: the professional, the amateur, and the opportunist.

The professional is simply any one, or group, that makes their living off of theft or fraud. They are hard to catch because they will spend the time and money to have tools to assist them. They are also habitual and generally have a criminal record.

The amateur is someone who steals for fun, or a dare, or just simply because the can. A kleptomaniac would be a good example. These are the people that walk into a store with the intention that they are going to steal. They may not always know exactly what they want, but they will not pay for it.

An opportunist is different. They don’t have any intention of stealing when they leave their homes that day. Along the way, something happens that presents an opportunity that they can’t resist. That’s what makes it so hard to anticipate. The opportunity has to present itself. Very specific circumstances have to occur to make an otherwise honest shopper steal.

The good news is that retail anti-theft devices are a great deterrent against the opportunist. No matter how great an opportunity presents itself, if these retail anti-shoplifting tools protect your merchandise, they will forgo that opportunity.
