A rather unorthodox trick…

Back in the day, my Loss Prevention trainer would try to impart his wisdom on me. He would show me all of his tricks of the trade, if you will. To this day, one of them still sticks in my head. It was his unorthodox use of a retail anti-theft device.

My trainer knew that shoplifters would either try to remove the retail anti-theft devices completely, or steal products that did not have any tags on them.

So when a shoplifter goes out the door, it is just as quiet as any normal, law-abiding citizen. My trainer wanted to have the upper hand going out to make a shoplifting apprehension, so he would take an EAS tag and put it in his pocket.

This way, he would set the alarm off going out the doors. The shoplifter, who had not been expecting the alarm, would be completely off guard at the sound. As they stopped, my trainer would be able to swiftly approach and make the apprehension.

While nowadays many retailers have policies against this practice, I will have to admit, it was fun to see the look on their faces when the alarms sounded.

Sometimes you’re on your game, sometimes you have to catch up…

I would love to say that all of the ways I try to prevent retail theft are well thought out, time tested, pro-active solutions. Really, I would love to say that. The reality is that a lot of what I do is reactionary.

I move around from one hot spot to the next trying to stay on top of the losses, much less trying to stay ahead of the game.

It is nice to be able to use retail anti-theft devices like cheap tags and cheap labels when and where I need them the most. I can add them to a new area being hit as soon as we discover significant losses starting.

I can also stop tagging other areas if the shrink, and the demand, for an item decreases. It saves payroll hours where I don’t need them, and lets us focus on the areas that do.

As long as I stay active and alert, I can reduce the stores shrink to a minimum. Every once in a while, I do get caught off guard; luckily, it doesn’t take me long to catch back up.

Save yourself the hassle…

My co-manager and I made an apprehension the other day. It was a small dollar amount respectively, only around fifty dollars. In some ways, I almost wish that I hadn’t stopped them. It turned out to be more of a hassle than what it was worth.

Don’t get me wrong; one of my primary job descriptions is to prevent retail theft. This is what I signed up for. It is the circumstances around the apprehension that made for a very long day.

It started out as a typical case. A male came into our tool department picked up a few low dollar tools that did not have retail anti-theft devices on them due to the price point (a probelm that could have been solved with the use of cheap tags or cheap labels). He then stuffed the items into his shirt and then proceeded to walk out the door.

It was after we stopped him that we found out this man was actually only 17 years old. We had to call either his parents or the police to pick him up because of his age. We opted for his parents.

Next thing we know his Mom came, with his two younger (under ten) sisters to pick him up. They were restless as the mom had a billion questions. Later, his dad had to stop by the store with another lengthy set of questions. For the fifty dollars we recovered, we probably spent three times that in payroll dealing with the case.

The moral of this story is that when dealing with minors, save yourself the hassle and call the authorities. Though you should always attempt to prevent retail theft be smart about it.

Why are they stealing?

In order to understand how to prevent retail theft, it’s a good idea to understand some of the psychology behind why people steal to begin with.

 Let’s start with the basics.

Need. Some people simply steal out of necessity. They see no other way to obtain the basics of survival – food, clothing, and shelter- without stealing. Sometimes retail anti-theft devices will deter them from stealing from your store, and they will move to a store that does not use them. They will still steal as needs don’t go away until they are filled.

Some steal out of want. People need food; they don’t need beer, alcohol and twenty dollars a pound steak. Retail anti-theft devices will be a good deterrent for these shoplifters because wants will come and go. So will shoplifters when they see the retail anti-theft devices.

Some people steal for an emotional rush. These are tricky because there is no specific merchandise that they target. It is more about the act than about what they take. Anti-shoplifting tactics in conjunction with anti-theft devices will help dissuade these shoplifters.

While you may not always know what shoplifters are thinking, retail anti-theft devices will always help prevent retail theft.

Friends and family events are great in so many ways….

One of the marketing tools used to drive sales is to open up special days for friends and family shopping events. These days are for the store employees to get everyone they know into the store to spend as much money as they can. The catch is that they get to have additional discounts (usually equal to the employee discount) taken off their purchase.

It works well on a few levels. One is that the employees are doing the legwork of driving the business in. Two, people are more willing to respond to a sale if it is presented by someone they know and trust. Three, employees are less likely to give unauthorized discounts if there are days where a legitimate discount can be given.

If discount abuse is the gateway to employee theft and pass offs, then these kinds of sales are a great way to prevent retail theft. You also get to know who your employee’s friends and family are, so that if they do come in, you can keep an eye out for employee theft and discount abuse.

Different kinds of thieves…

When a shoplifter comes into your store trying to steal your products, there has to be an end game. If you know what they are doing with the stolen items, you have a better chance of finding solutions to prevent retail theft from occurring.

Some of the items go toward personal usage. They can be consumable items like food or makeup. Most of the time, people who steal consumables are taking the merchandise out of need. The shoplifters who steal clothing will react to the use of a retail anti-theft device. While clothing and shoes can be for personal use, they are often motivated by want instead of by need.

There are some who try to sell stolen merchandise for profit. They can sell in a variety of ways. Some set up shop on a street corner or a booth at a flea market. Others will sell on the internet. Depending on how much of their income relies on selling stolen merchandise, more detailed system should be used in conjunction with trained anti-shoplifting personnel to make detainments.

When did Shoplifting become a game?

I was walking through the mall over the weekend when I saw a man running toward the doors with a pair of shoes in his hands. There was another man chasing after him.

While my first reaction was concern for the situation unfolding before me, I quickly became confused. It appeared that the man being chased was laughing. He then threw back the box of shoes and kept on going out the doors. It seemed like a really strange game of “hot potato”. The thief seemed to solely be taking the shoes to taunt the store employee that was chasing him.

The second man picked up the shoes and started to walk back to ward the main thoroughfare of the mall. I noticed he had a nametag on from one of the shoe stores in the mall.

My initial reaction was right. It was a shoplifter. I guess he thought the whole thing would be funny to try and steal a pair of shoes. Since the shoes were inside a box, I couldn’t tell if they had any retail anti-theft devices on them.

It’s hard to try and prevent retail theft when a culprit thinks its all fun and games. Those are the times where the situation can quickly go downhill because the shoplifter suddenly realizes it is no longer a game.

Multi-Functional Anti-Shoplifting Items

As a society, we love to multi task. We love things that do double duty for us. It’s a pen AND a laser pointer. That jacket is reversible AND zips apart into three separate jackets. I can walk AND chew gum at the same time.

Our expectations as a society are to maximize the fullest potential of any given object or person at any given point in time. Why would we not expect the same from our retail anti-theft devices as they prevent retail theft?

Well the great thing about Cheap Labels and Cheap Tags is that they both have more than one function. Both are deterrents for shoplifters who know they can’t defeat them AND they can stop the shoplifters who attempt to steal the items they are attached to, regardless of their being present on the item, by setting off the alarm at the front of the store.

Who knew laundry detergent was such a hot commodity?

Have you been reading all of the news about Tide laundry detergent thefts lately?  I have seen several articles in the past month about the increase of Tide laundry detergent theft and its value on the streets.  Of course, working in a grocery setting this only confirms what my inventory has been telling me for months now.  I am just glad that I use retail anti-theft devices to help prevent retail theft and at least keep this activity to a minimum in my stores.

Tide laundry detergent has become so popular the new name is “liquid gold”.  Numerous police departments have reported seeing Tide laundry detergent bottles traded (like cash) for drugs and other goods.  There does not seem to be any indication this will slow down.  For those smaller grocery stores that can’t afford full anti-shoplifting systems, I still suggest getting some retail anti-theft devices to help protect your stores.

The fact is, even cheap labels and cheap tags will deter theft.  Shoplifters don’t know if an EAS tag is a name brand or not.  All they see is that the intended item is protected.  With the low margin on grocery goods we have to make sure to keep every penny we earn so don’t let your store get taken by this type of theft.  Arm yourself today.
