Further Proof

My most recent shoplifting case came out of our health and beauty section of the store. On this particular day a woman came in and made a beeline right for our make up aisle. She started putting items into a small hand held basket. It would have seemed completely normal, except every time she touched something, she immediately started scoping the area to see if anyone was watching.

When you are looking to prevent retail theft, it’s pretty helpful to know what some of the common traits of shoplifters are. When they are more concerned about the people around them than of what they are doing, it’s generally a good idea to keep an eye on them.

We use anti theft devices on our products. Cheap labels are affixed to the outside of the packaging. Even though it might be easy to peel the labels off, it is still a great deterrent. Some shoplifters won’t bother with those items. Some, like my lady here, took everything to a back corner of the store. She pulled each of those label off.

After she discarded the cheap labels, I picked them up and had them in my pocket when I made the apprehension. Not only did the sound of the alarm as I went through the door startle her, but when she tried to deny the theft, I showed her the recovered labels. She immediately came back in side knowing she had been caught. The tags are now further evidence when the case goes to court that the crime had been committed intentionally.
