While employed as an LP agent for a retailer, we had a lot of false EAS alarms. They were primarily triggered when employees forgot to remove anti-theft devices at POS; other times it was because tagged merchandise was displayed too close to the pedestals or customers were wearing clothing from other stores with source tags sewn into the seam. It got to the point where we had so many non-theft alarm activations that associates learned to just ignore it. I didn’t realize that this EAS “crying wolf” situation was actually reducing the efficacy of our anti-shoplifting strategy.

The effectiveness of anti-theft devices to prevent retail theft is dependent on several factors, including offender awareness of tags and the system’s capabilities to detect theft, uniform placement and application of labels, consistent removal of tags at the register, and staff response to alarm triggers in order to bolster the system’s anti-shoplifting message. These non-theft alarms were actually reducing the success of our efforts because they were desensitizing our employees, which in turn weakened potential offenders’ view of potential risk of detection.

In order for tags and labels to successfully prevent retail theft, shoplifters need to believe that by taking an item they will be detected and forced to face the consequences. This message can be emphasize by training store employees to consistently approach customers who activate the alarms and check their receipt. Not only will nervous thieves be more apprehensive to take merchandise that might result in staff interaction, but the next shoplifter will see that store workers care about where their merchandise is going.

There are three sides to shrink. There is external theft (shoplifters), internal theft (employees), and operational errors. When you use anti theft devices like an EAS system to prevent retail theft, the common thought is concerning the external element. What a lot of retailers don’t know is that an EAS system is more than just an anti shoplifting device.

I often challenge my cashiers to be 100% accurate in their checkouts. We use a cart test to validate their accuracy. If the cashier is not at 100% I show them what they missed and why. I then show them how those mistakes turn into losses. We spend time training the entire front-end staff that those mistakes, however honest they might be, can cause a loss. Those errors are also likely to set off the EAS system.

By responding to the alarms, my cashiers have a chance to discover and fix their mistakes before they become a shrink loss. The EAS system will catch the activated tags or labels that pass through the doors, regardless of it being a shoplifter, an employee stealing, or an honest mistake.

Do your mangers know how to determine an operational error from a case of internal theft? They may not. The one real indicator between the two situations is the element of intent. An employee that is stealing intends to take merchandise or cash. An employee that makes an operational error can potentially cause the same loss, they just didn’t intend to.

I had an employee theft case one time where the cashier was passing off merchandise to her boy friend. He would check out in her line and have a cart filled with product. She would only ring up portions of the cart.

One day, she missed the anti theft device on an item. The alarm sounded as he went out the door. Another employee went to respond and noticed that our cashier just waved him on through. That’s when I was notified.

The cashier tracked me down to say that it was just a mistake, and how she was always trying to prevent retail theft. I knew differently.

After reviewing video and some transactions, I noticed that there was a pattern of every Saturday morning she would pass of merchandise to him. If it weren’t for that anti theft device, who knows how much longer the losses would have happened.

When you spend the time and money to prevent retail theft, it is important to make sure you are getting the most out of your security or EAS system. In my training classes, I show my new hires how the EAS system operates, and more importantly what role they play in out anti shoplifting program.

One of the most overlooked components of an EAS system is getting your employees to understand that anti theft devices do not catch shoplifters. They can only deter them. It is really up to the store personnel to make the EAS system work up to its fullest potential.

I show my new hires how the EAS tags and labels set off the towers at the doors. I then walk them through how to properly respond to the customers, politely validate a receipt, and then deactivate the paid for merchandise.

When trained correctly, the EAS system makes a bigger impact on our shrink reduction. EAS systems don’t make merchandise recoveries; they just point you in the right direction. Attentive and responsive employees, on the other hand, recover your product and take your anti shoplifting system to the next level.

It is very true that money can’t buy happiness. There are more important things in life to be thankful or wishful for. That being said, when your business is suffering from inventory losses that are dragging your profits down, stress is sure to follow. Any small business owner who is putting there all on the line to run a successful business knows that there are enough other things to worry about than trying to make ends meet.

In order to prevent retail theft, whether it comes at the hands of your employees or shoplifters, you need a cost effective solution. Anti theft devices are out on the market ranging from expensive name brands to shoddy foreign imports that don’t work half the time. The best solution is cheap tags and cheap labels that are made right here in the U.S.A.

Start the easy transition back into stress free happiness. While yes, it is true that money can’t buy complete happiness, doesn’t mean you can’t buy a little piece of happiness the right anti theft devices.

Just because protecting your merchandise comes at a cost, doesn’t mean that it has to break your bank. Every one is working under more stringent budgets than ever before. Every single penny must be accounted for and used only if absolutely necessary. I have even seen some companies decline orders for their stores for simple items like bags and register tape. It is getting that bad out there for some retailers.

Some good news is that there are inexpensive and reliable anti theft devices out there. Trying to prevent retail theft should not send your company into the red. Using cheap tags and cheap labels will help you stay within your budgets for expense control. They will then increase your profit exponentially by reducing your losses from shrink.

This will be one purchase your company will make that won’t be scrutinized. The maximum result for a minimal investment is a smart decision that anyone reviewing your order would love to approve. Make the fiscally smart decision the first time with cheap tags and cheap labels.

Health and beauty care are a major loss area for retailers that carry those items. They are generally expensive products to start with. Because they are a consumable item (they are used up) there is a need to replenish on a regular basis. They are also very small and easy to conceal, especially when they are out of a package. A prime example is nail polish. They can run anywhere from a few dollars to close to $20 dollars a bottle. It’s one of the few items that does not come in a package.

This is where anti theft devices can be a little tricky. Because of the small size of the bottles, a small label is the best way to go. Sometimes you can find cheap labels that will work. If the labels can replicate a bar code, that would be even better.

Trying to prevent retail theft with out the use of cheap labels or cheap tags is like putting out a fire with your bare fingers. Sure it will work with marginal results, but how much are you willing to get burnt in the process?

It would have seemed completely normal, except every time she touched something, she immediately started scoping the area to see if anyone was watching.

When you are looking to prevent retail theft, it’s pretty helpful to know what some of the common traits of shoplifters are. When they are more concerned about the people around them than of what they are doing, it’s generally a good idea to keep an eye on them.

We use anti theft devices on our products. Cheap labels are affixed to the outside of the packaging. Even though it might be easy to peel the labels off, it is still a great deterrent. Some shoplifters won’t bother with those items. Some, like my lady here, took everything to a back corner of the store. She pulled each of those label off.

After she discarded the cheap labels, I picked them up and had them in my pocket when I made the apprehension. Not only did the sound of the alarm as I went through the door startle her, but when she tried to deny the theft, I showed her the recovered labels. She immediately came back in side knowing she had been caught. The tags are now further evidence when the case goes to court that the crime had been committed intentionally.

Anti-theft devices are important and necessary in order to prevent theft. The majority of theft occurs through crimes of opportunity. These are situations where theft is made easy for the shoplifter by providing them with clothes and other merchandise that is not protected. Because of this, providing even cheap tags on merchandise can greatly help reduce theft and have a positive impact on your shrink.

However, as we continue to develop new and innovative ways to prevent retail theft, professional shoplifters are always right behind us with ways to defeat the measures we have put in place. Currently one of those major problems is with foil lined bags. The bags are preventing the Electronic Article Surveillance from picking up the signal of the tags. Occasionally these bags are bulky and obvious, but I have seen plenty of them that are very well made and hardly noticeable.

Because there will always be this epic battle between loss prevention and shoplifters, it is important to remember what to focus on when looking for shoplifters. My focal point is always on behaviors, not just what the subject is selecting. If you ignore a subject because they are selecting merchandise that is hard tagged, you may be missing something big. Stay focused on behaviors and you will catch those professional shoplifters that are using tools like foil lined bags. The bright side is that most jurisdictions will bring additional charges on the use of tools in conjunction with retail theft charges.
