Boosters vs. Shoplifters

Dealing with shoplifters is pretty easy.  They are easy to deter with anti-theft devices and look for any excuse not to go through with it.  Boosters are a nightmare.  They do their homework on retailers, know how to defeat a variety of tags and are very bold.

I remember my first apprehension like it was yesterday.  I was walking around in our home section, looking at muffin pans when I heard someone next to me.   As I glanced behind me, I saw a man smashing the corners of a Kitchen Aid mixer box.  He quickly got the anti-theft devices off the box (EAS sticker and spider wrap) and made his next selection.  I couldn’t believe what I was seeing as he headed for the door with a $300 mixer under one arm and a $400 pot and pan set under another.  The guy training me reacted quickly and the apprehension was made.

After all the paper work was filed, I asked him if this was an everyday occurrence.  He quickly schooled me on the average shoplifter vs. the definition of a booster.  Boosters, like shoplifters, don’t want to be caught, but they have confidence that they will get away which is why they go for such large items.  Most associates don’t fathom that people will be confident enough to steal large items, which is why most get away with it.  On a brighter note, companies are developing more anti-shoplifting tools that prevent retail theft, which is a good investment to make.
