A little known trick

Back in the day, my Loss Prevention trainer would try to impart his wisdom on me. He would show me all of his tricks of the trade, if you will. To this day, one of them still sticks in my head. It was his unorthodox use of an anti theft device.

My trainer knew that shoplifters would either try to remove the anti theft devices completely, or steal products that did not have any tags on them.

So when a shoplifter goes out the door, it is just as quiet as any normal, law-abiding citizen. My trainer wanted to have the upper hand going out to make a shoplifting apprehension, so he would take an EAS tag and put it in his pocket.

This way, he would set the alarm off going out the doors. The shoplifter, who had not been expecting the alarm, would be completely off guard at the sound. As they stopped, my trainer would be able to swiftly approach and make the apprehension.

While nowadays many retailers have policies against this practice, I will have to admit, it was fun to see the look on their faces when the alarms sounded.
