100% Accuracy

There are three sides to shrink. There are external thefts (shoplifters), internal thefts (employees), and operational errors. When you use retail anti-theft devices like an Electronic Article Surveillance System or EAS system to prevent retail theft, the common thought is concerning the external element. What a lot of retailers don’t know is that an EAS system is more than just an anti-shoplifting device.

I often challenge my cashiers to strive for 100% accuracy in their checkouts. We use a cart test to validate this accuracy. If the cashier is not at 100% I show them what they missed and why. I then show them how those mistakes turn into losses. We spend time training the entire front-end staff that those mistakes, however small they might be, can cause a loss and how those errors are also likely to set off the stores EAS system.

By responding to the alarms, my cashiers have a chance to discover and fix their mistakes before they become a shrink problem. The EAS system will catch the activated tags or labels that pass through the doors, regardless of it being a shoplifter, an employee stealing, or an honest mistake.
